About the International Institutions and Global Governance Program

About the Program

Today’s most pressing challenges—ranging from combatting climate change to advancing global health—are transnational. No country can solve these challenges alone, and responses are frequently most effective when countries cooperate. The International Institutions and Global Governance (IIGG) program aims to provide policymakers and international organizations with creative and practical solutions to improve multilateral responses to global threats. 

The IIGG program fulfills its mandate by:

• Engaging CFR fellows in research on improving existing international institutions and building new ones to address specific global challenges—including climate change, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, transnational terrorism, and global health—and disseminating the research through books, articles, Council Special Reports, and other outlets;
• Bringing together influential foreign policymakers, scholars, and CFR members in New York, Washington, DC, and other select cities to debate the merits of different approaches to solving transnational problems and frameworks at meetings;
• Hosting meetings designed to help foreign policy experts discuss and assess the opportunities and obstacles to more effective international cooperation.
