Nigeria Security Tracker Weekly Update: September 9 - September 15

Below is a visualization and description of some of the most significant incidents of political violence in Nigeria from September 9 to September 15, 2017. This update also represents violence related to Boko Haram in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. These incidents will be included in the Nigeria Security Tracker.

  • September 10: Gunmen abducted seven in Akoko North-East, Ondo.
  • September 10: Soldiers clashed with supporters of the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, around Kanu's residence Umuahia, Abia, resulting in numerous injuries.
  • September 10: Nigerian troops killed "many" (est. at ten) Boko Haram militants in Bama, Borno.
  • September 11: Nigerian soldiers killed five suspects in the Plateau violence last week and lost one of their own in Bassa, Plateau.
  • September 11: Soldiers killed seven IPOB members in Isiala Ngwa South, Abia.
  • September 12: IPOB members, Hausa, and soldiers clashed in Oyigbo, Rivers. There were no casualties.
  • September 12: Fifty soldiers invaded the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Umuahia, Abia and beat up a number of journalists.
  • September 13: A suicide bomber killed herself and five others at a mosque in Kolofata, Cameroon. Boko Haram was suspected.
  • September 13: A gunman killed three in Oturkpo, Benue.
  • September 14: Reprisal violence in Oturkpo, Benue resulted in three more deaths.
  • September 14: A clash between soldiers and IPOB members led to two deaths in Jos South, Plateau.
  • September 14: Soldiers invaded IPOB leader Kanu's house, killing eighteen in Umuahia, Abia.
