Heidi Crebo-Rediker, Former State Department Chief Economist, Joins CFR as Senior Fellow
Heidi Crebo-Rediker, former chief economist at the U.S. Department of State, has joined the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) as a senior fellow. Her work will focus on the role of economics in U.S. diplomacy, and she will also participate in CFR’s Renewing America initiative, which studies the domestic economic underpinnings of U.S. power.

October 2, 2013—Heidi Crebo-Rediker, former chief economist at the U.S. Department of State, has joined the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) as a senior fellow. Her work will focus on the role of economics in U.S. diplomacy, and she will also participate in CFR’s Renewing America initiative, which studies the domestic economic underpinnings of U.S. power.

Crebo-Rediker is the newest addition to an illustrious roster of scholars and practitioners on economics and geoeconomics at CFR, which also includes former Treasury secretaries Robert E. Rubin and Timothy F. Geithner; former Office of Management and Budget director Peter R. Orszag; Stanley Fischer, former governor for the Bank of Israel; Mervyn King, former governor of the Bank of England; CFR’s Director of the Maurice R. Greenberg Center for Geoeconomic Studies Sebastian Mallaby; Director of International Economics Benn Steil; Senior Fellow for International Economics Jagdish N. Bhagwati; and Senior Fellow for International Economics Robert Kahn.

In March 2012, then secretary of state Hillary Clinton appointed Crebo-Rediker the State Department’s first chief economist responsible for foreign policy issues with a significant economic or financial component.

Prior to joining the State Department, Crebo-Rediker was chief of international finance and economics for the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. She was the architect of the bipartisan national infrastructure bank legislation (the BUILD Act), introduced in March 2011 and included in President Barack Obama’s JOBS Act.
Before entering government, she spent nearly two decades in investment banking. Crebo-Rediker received her A.B. from Dartmouth College and her M.Sc. from the London School of Economics.
