U.S. and Western military officials are calling on Iran to help stabilize Afghanistan, but historic tensions and allegations of arming militants raise doubts about Tehran’s intent.

Since cutting ties in 1979, U.S.-Iran dialogue has been sparse and largely fruitless.

The number of militias is reportedly multiplying in Iraq, while their loyalties grow more dispersed and their tactics more violent and sectarian-focused.    

Five years after the U.S.-led invasion, Afghanistan continues to face a number of problems aside from its battle with Taliban fighters and opium farmers.

Despite a security clampdown in Baghdad, Iraq’s capital remains a hotbed of sectarian violence. The new government has yet to find a solution—military, political, or otherwise—for securing the city.
